What’s The Bottom Line On CBD & Anxiety?

CBD for anxiety is a natural choice for healing. Learn how CBD products can help you relax and manage stress.

CBD Background

Say the word marijuana, and as recently as a few decades ago, most people would assume you were talking about THC, or tetrahydrocannabinol. THC is a naturally-occurring psychoactive compound in hemp plants that can make users “feel high.” Much has changed in the last 40 years, when marijuana (sometimes called pot or weed) use was associated with hippie counter-culture. Now, our society considers the hemp plant to be a safe and effective tool for natural healing. This shift is largely thanks to CBD, and the relationship between CBD and anxiety.

CBD is short for cannabidiol. Like THC, CBD is a completely natural compound found in the hemp plant. But unlike THC, CBD is not psychoactive, and does not cause users to feel high. CBD will not cause you to experience drastically-altered brain states associated with traditional marijuana use. What CBD does do is to encourage feelings of relaxation and reduced stress. In other words: Taking CBD might help you feel less anxious. You may find that CBD can help you feel calm and promote deep sleep.

How It Works

CBD and anxiety works when the cannabidiol interacts with the body’s central nervous system. Specifically, CBD may boost serotonin levels. Serotonin is a “feel-good” or “happy” hormone; reduced amounts of serotonin have been linked to depression and anxiety disorders. While a class of antidepressant drugs known as SSRIs (for example, Prozac or Zoloft) help to prolong the activity of serotonin in the body, CBD may function as a natural aid in reducing anxiety. If you are already taking an SSRI, you should not stop usage or change your dosage without speaking to your doctor or pharmacist. But whether or not you have been formally treated for stress and depression, you may find that CBD can help manage your anxiety levels.

Although scientific research is still in preliminary stages, studies have shown that CBD use lowers anxiety. Of course, there are many forms of anxiety, including Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD) and insomnia/sleep loss as a result of nighttime anxiety. Even though studies are still being conducted and analyzed, many people consider anecdotal evidence as proof that CBD works. You may have friends or family members who have experienced less anxiety with CBD. It’s important to also talk to your doctor or a pharmacist about the possible uses, aids, and side effects. The most common side effects of CBD usage are changes in weight or appetite, fatigue, and/or bowel issues.

CBD Products

Because your health journey should be unique to you, there are a variety of CBD products available, each with a unique or specific use. People with sleep loss may find that CBD and melatonin are a helpful pair in aiding restful sleep; many products are now offered that combine the two powerful, all-natural sleep aids. CBD may also contain natural relaxation aids, such as lavender extract and L-theanine, an amino acid that promotes relaxation without drowsiness. With a variety of CBD products, you can manage daytime anxiety and nighttime anxiety with the right tools. As with all dietary supplements, be sure to read the package labeling for ingredient, dosage, and usage information, and share any questions with a professional. The CBD industry is still largely unregulated, so it is important to purchase CBD products from a reputable source, like a pharmacy you know and trust.

How do you take CBD? It is commonly available as CBD oil. CBD oil may be flavored, but most often CBD oil tastes like the hemp plant (a little grassy and herbaceous). CBD oil is a smart way to reduce anxiety with a dosage tailored to your specific needs. Suggested dosage amounts vary, and the oil allows users to increase or decrease the dosage according to their constitution and doctor’s advice. (Although CBD is available over the counter, like all medical products, it is suggested that CBD and anxiety are discussed with your physician or pharmacists before beginning a new regime. It’s also a smart idea to start with the lowest-possible dose, and gradually increase if needed.) While CBD oil is one of the most common ways to take CBD, it is also available in a variety of other options. CBD gummies taste great, and are fun to eat.

Rest assured that CBD is legal. Increasingly, states are legalizing the medical and recreational use of marijuana. But CBD, unlike marijuana, does not contain THC. CBD is legal and you can buy CBD without a prescription. Even though CBD is widely available, remember that it is a powerful tool for healing, and should not be taken in excess, abused, or given to children without doctor supervision.

We live in an increasingly chaotic world, and many of us experience symptoms like insomnia, stress, and anxiety. Talk to a pharmacist today about how CBD and anxiety may be a perfect match for managing your health and wellness.
